CPE211   Chemistry for Chemical Engineers   (10 credits)

Year Running: 2015/2016
Credit level: F5
Pre-requisites   CPE1004
    CPE1004 or equivalent
Pre-requisites for   CHM3298   CHM3299   (when the module is running)

Description

This module aims to extend the chemical science knowledge gained at level 1 in a way that it can be applied to modern chemical engineering situations. This will include theory relating molecular and bulk properties and practical applications of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometry. This module will look at physical science approaches to chemical engineering problems and will cover three main topics: 1. Organic Chemistry will extend knowledge gained in CHM155 to consider acids and bases and reactions of the carbonyl group.. 2. Physical Chemistry at Equilibria will look at the kinetics and thermodynamics of systems close to or at their equilibrium states. 3. Characterisation will address the basics of structure determination using NMR, IR and MS to characterise species in reaction processes. The over-riding aim is to give students an overall appreciations of the fundamentals of modern Organic Chemistry and to prepare students to continue Organic Chemistry at Level 3 if required.
